New Brookings Working Paper: Nonincome Welfare and Inclusive Growth in South Africa

DPRU Director Prof Haroon Bhorat and researchers Ben Stanwix and Derek Yu, have just published a Brookings Institution, Africa Growth Initiative working paper (#18), on nonincome welfare and inclusive growth in South Africa.

Building on previous work, this paper seeks to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of changes in nonincome welfare over an 18-year period in South Africa, from 1993 to 2010. In an attempt to extend the reach of existing research, we offer a more nuanced understanding of the role that assets—both public and private—and services, as well as education, have played in post apartheid welfare in South Africa.
