Yonas Alem
Yonas Alem – he (University of Cape Town) – Senior Fellow and Program Lead
Yonas Alem is a Research Professor in the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town, affiliated with several leading development economics networks, including MIT's J-PAL King Climate Action Initiative, Aim for Scale, Environment for Development (EfD), and Economic Research Southern Africa (ERSA). Alem earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Gothenburg, with visiting fellowships at UC Berkeley and Brown University. An applied microeconomist working across Africa and South Asia, his research uses rigorous causal inference and randomized controlled trials to study development, behavioural, and environmental economics—including preference formation, poverty dynamics, technology adoption, and firms' investment decisions under behavioural and market frictions. Over the past two decades, Alem has published extensively in reputable international journals and built substantial research capacity in the Global South through teaching, graduate supervision, and mentorship of emerging researchers.
