The Developer’s Dilemma Structural transformation, inequality dynamics, and inclusive growth
Edited by Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Kunal Sen, Andy Sumner, and Arief Yusuf, this volume explores the tension between structural transformation and inequality in a range of low- and middle- income countries worldwide. The book also provides an understanding of the possibilities offered by different paths to structural transformation, and brings together empirical research and analysis from nearly 30 leading international scholars, and features case studies from 9 countries across Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia.
The DPRU authored Chapter 9: "Economic growth, rising inequality, and de-industrialization: South Africa's Kuznetsian tension." This chapter delves into analysis on South Africa's economic history, and talks about why poverty, inequality and unemployment rates remain high despite policy interventions. Co-authors include Prof Haroon Bhorat, Morné Oosthuizen, François Steenkamp, Kezia Lilenstein from the DPRU, and Amy Thornton in SALDRU.
