EfD South Africa hosted a three-day capacity-building training workshop on Academic Writing and Research Ethics on March 10-12. It was led by Yonas Alem, the Director of Academic Programs at EfD, and was attended by 24 PhD candidates and early-career researchers from six Sub-Saharan African countries. The aim was to equip the attendees with essential research skills for their academic careers.

Covered essential skills for researchers

The workshop was held at the Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha, and over the three days of intensive training, Yonas Alem covered critical aspects of academic research, including identifying suitable research topics, publishing in high-impact journals, and ethical considerations in data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Positive response

The training, attended by 10 women and 14 men, was made possible through the generous support of Economic Research Southern Africa (ERSA), an organization that focuses on the upskilling of researchers and policymakers, and increasing the penetration of research into policy discussions. The participants responded positively to the workshop, highlighting the program’s practical insights and relevance to their research careers.

This initiative underscores EfD South Africa’s commitment to fostering high-quality academic research and ethical research practices among emerging scholars in the region.
