The first day of 2021 marked the start of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). 
 
Fifty-four African countries signed the agreement that makes the AfCFTA the largest free trade area in the world. The overarching aim of the AfCFTA is to create a single market for goods and services with free movement of capital.
 
Professor Faizel Ismail, Director of the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, unpacks why the AfCFTA is good news for South Africa.
