Master of Philosophy in Development Policy and Practice (MPhil)

On Thursday, 3 April 2025, the Nelson Mandela School celebrated a momentous occasion as the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) students specialising in Development Policy and Practice— a program that has since been discontinued— proudly wore their gowns and caps. Amongst this distinguished group, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Tadiwanashe Dube, Sbusiso Khumalo and Lerato Ramasesane, who successfully navigated their academic journeys with excellence, determination and courage. The MPhil programme offered an exceptional and structured learning experience, rich in opportunities for applied research on effective public policy design and implementation across the African continent.
“The Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance reignited my passion and renewed my commitment to driving positive change. Within its walls, I rediscovered a deep sense of purpose and a firm resolve to contribute meaningfully to the development of our beloved African continent. I am profoundly grateful to the extraordinary team for sharing their remarkable stories and experiences, which have been a wellspring of inspiration throughout my journey, “affirmed Tadiwanashe Dube.
Reflecting on his experience, Sbusiso Khumalo stated, “Obtaining this MPhil in Development Policy and Practice at UCT has been an exciting and transformative journey. The School provided access to exceptional professors and lecturers who are deeply committed to driving positive change and shaping the development policy landscape across Africa.”
Lerato Ramasesane shared insights about his academic journey: “Coming from a public policy background, the MPhil in Development Policy and Practice exposed me to real life case studies, carefully crafted by the best researchers and authors in the public service and academia. It gave me a practical exposure to Public Policy in Practice in an African context. My journey with the Nelson Mandela School was amazing, the intimate class of four students, the seminars and case study style of teaching, the presentations on certain topics by key industry titans and being taught by people who have served governments at the highest level provides a progressive platform to engage deeply and cultivate a culture of rigorous engagement.”
The Nelson Mandela School takes immense pride in our MPhil graduates; their achievements represent the culmination of hard work and dedication. We have no doubt they will excel in their future endeavours and continue to make a significant impact!
