The Role of Development Banks in Financing Sustainable Development:
Lessons for African Development Banks from Brazil’s BNDES
The role of development banks in financing sustainable economic development is receiving greater attention, while climate funding commitments by advanced economies have not been met and development assistance budgets are being cut.
The seminar with Prof Ferraz will trace the background and evolution of BNDES and how it has been financed by the state, how BNDES supports Brazil's new green economy oriented industrial policy Nova Indústria Brasil (NIB), the role BNDES has played in financing green infrastructure and manufacturing in Latin America including in collaboration with other development banks operating in the region. The seminar aims to draw lessons from BNDES for African development banks.
