Prof Fiona Tregenna
Prof Fiona Tregenna holds the DSI/NRF South African Research Chair in Industrial Development, and is a Professor of Economics at the University of Johannesburg. Prof Tregenna has a PhD in Economics from the University of Cambridge. She has been deeply involved in economic policy debates for the past 25 years, especially around industrial policy. Prof Tregenna serves on a number of high-level boards, panels and councils, and has extensive corporate governance experience.
She sits part-time on the South African Competition Tribunal where she adjudicates competition cases. As a member of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council, she advises President Cyril Ramaphosa on economic policy. Prof Tregenna has previously worked for research institutes and universities in South Africa and abroad, and in the trade union movement in South Africa. She has advised international organisations such as UNIDO, UNCTAD and the ILO, and has contributed to various flagship United Nations publications.
Prof Tregenna has published extensively, including in top journals. In 2021 she co-edited two books published by Oxford University Press. She has delivered keynote addresses at a number of international conferences, has received various awards and major grants for her research, and has led large research projects.
