REDI3X3

The Research Project on Employment, Income Distribution and Inclusive Growth is an independent national research initiative focusing on dynamics, interconnections and trends in employment, income distribution and inclusive growth. Funded by National Treasury, REDI3x3 promotes dialogue across disciplines and paradigms, and between researchers and policy makers, to address the critical challenges of unemployment, inequality and poverty.

A key project is Econ3x3, an online forum for critical public debate, publishing research-based contributions and contributions from economists and other social science researchers, policymakers and relevant experts. Professor Murray Leibbrandt is a Project Director of REDI3x3, focusing on Income Distribution. For more information visit: http://www.econ3x3.org/

Carnegie3 (Mandela Initiative)

In September 2012, UCT hosted the ‘Towards Carnegie3’ conference, attended by over 500 researchers, government officials and representatives from civil society to share information and models for urgent action on key themes – the role of law, unemployment and job creation, the land, urban and environmental challenges, education, health, government policy and community mobilisation. (For more about the conference and to download the conference report visit: https://mandelainitiative.org.za/conference-resources/)

The PII continued to play a leading role in developing this national initiative, which is supported by a Secretariat based at UCT's Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit. The C3 process - which was subsequently renamed the Mandela Initiative - generated policy-relevant research, guided by DST-NRF SARChI Research Chairs, and conducted workshops to engage stakeholders from civil society, government and research institutions.
