GSDPP Academic Director Brian Levy has written an op-ed for the Daily Maverick, published on Wednesday 3 May 2017. In it, he discusses GSDPP research into education governance in the Eastern Cape and argues that active citizenship may be something that tips the balance when it comes to achieving positive school outcomes in areas with otherwise poor governance support.

"Bureaucracies are embedded in politics; far-reaching improvements depend on very specific, and very difficult-to-achieve, political conditions. But there also is abundant evidence that a non-hierarchical entry point for improving educational outcomes has real potential to achieve gains – not always-and-everywhere, but in some schools, some of the time."
