Latest News: The Mandela School

The Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at the University of Cape Town has much to celebrate, including numerous initiatives and commitments that the School has been entrusted with by various organisations. Commitments such as Professor Alan Hirsch’s appointment to serve in the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) , continue to speak to the heart of the School – a School that is dedicated to building the capacity of the developmental state and promoting strategic and ethical public leadership. 

The Mandela School is also pleased to share that the School’s Professor Alison Gillwald has been named as the first African executive member, and deputy president, of the Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet). Read more: here.

Building Bridges

The Mandela School continues to build bridges through seminars, conferences, public lecture series and workshops, to name a few. This was evident when the Mandela School Director, Professor Faizel Ismail, led a successful workshop in partnership with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The workshop, titled Transformation Industralisation, the African Continental Free Trade Agreement and Global Governance Workshop, was held at the UCT Graduate School of Business Conference Centre on 27 to 28 September 2019.

The Mandela School’s Dr Marianne Camerer, together with the School’s Adjunct Professor Advocate Vusi Pikoli, participated in the UNODC Regional Conference on Fast-Tracking UNCAC Implementation, in Livingstone, Zambia from 14 to 18 October 2019. High-level officials from Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, together with representatives from civil society, the private sector and development partners, met to promote the creation of partnerships to accelerate UNCAC’s implementation and support the realization of SDG 16 in Southern Africa. Besides UCT, South African representatives working on anti-corruption came from the Hawks, SIU, NPA, DPSA, Corruption Watch, FXI, Helen Suzman Foundation and the Institute for Security Studies.

In addition, the Mandela School was privileged to partner with the Kofi Annan Foundation, with the support of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), in hosting  a successful two-day conference titled: “Democracy in Central and Southern Africa: The Road Ahead”. The conference was held at the UCT Graduate School of Business conference centre from 4 to 5 September 2019, where outgoing Chancellor of UCT and member of The Elders, Graça Machel, delivered a keynote address. Executive Education
 
Dr Marianne Camerer recently attended the graduation ceremony in Paris of the 4th Cohort of LeAD Campus, the innovative leadership programme for social entrepreneurs, developed in partnership with the University of Cape Town’s Mandela School, Sciences Po Executive Education, the ISM Groupe (Dakar) and Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
