The University of Cape Town’s Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Cheryl Hendricks as the new Director of the School, effective 1 April 2026. She succeeds Emeritus Professor Faizel Ismail, who retired in December 2025 after serving as Director since 2019. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Prof Ismail for his leadership, commitment to strengthening the School’s partnerships across the continent and dedication to advancing public sector capacity development throughout Africa.

Prof Hendricks brings over thirty years of experience in governance and democratisation, conflict analysis, conflict prevention and resolution, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, regional peace and security architectures, transitional justice, reconciliation, preventing violent extremism and human rights. She is an internationally recognised expert and thought leader in peace and security in Africa, with a specific focus on Women, Peace and Security.

Throughout her distinguished career, Prof Hendricks has made significant contributions at international, continental, national and local levels. She has held academic, advisory and leadership roles, published influential research, and provided technical support to governments and intergovernmental organisations. Her work reflects a strong commitment to enhancing state capacity, promoting democratic governance and fostering inclusive peace and security.

Under Prof Hendricks' leadership, the mission of the Nelson Mandela School will continue to thrive. The Nelson Mandela School remains dedicated to building capable, ethical and developmental African states by equipping both emerging leaders and professionals with the skills, knowledge and values necessary to tackle complex governance challenges. Prof Hendricks’ understanding of Africa’s governance and peacebuilding landscapes, along with her long-standing engagement with policy actors, civil society and regional institutions, positions her well to guide the School into a new phase of growth, partnership and impact.

The Faculty of Commerce and the School warmly welcome Prof Hendricks as the new Director.

'We are confident that her leadership will enhance the School’s efforts and strengthen its role as a leading convening space for public governance on the continent,' Prof Suki Goodman, Dean, Faculty of Commerce.
