The democratic developmental state in Africa: Building on successes and failures
Hosted by the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, University of Cape Town
One of the greatest challenges facing Africa today is how to improve the livelihoods of its citizens. Commodity dependence and weak structural transformation have been noted as the main reasons for the low levels of development in Africa.
It is for this reason that the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance is hosting a discussion on the challenge of economic transformation in South Africa and the wider African continent. The aim of the discussion is to unpack the reasons African economies such as South Africa have failed to achieve inclusive growth and radical economic transformation, as well as, why industrialisation the key driver of economic growth remains elusive.
