Originally from Morocco, Dr Moutanabbir has studied and worked in Canada, taught in Egypt, as well as in Johannesburg in South Africa. But from the moment he joined AIFMRM, he recognised there something different about the Institute.

In early April, AIFMRM hosted its annual Research Retreat in Melkbosstrand on the scenic West Coast of the Cape. The retreat saw staff and PhD candidates dedicate time to research, present their work, socialise, and enjoy cold swims.

It takes a lot of hard work, dedication—and the commitment from donors to create an institute like AIFMRM. Over the past 10 years, it has gained a global reputation for cutting-edge research and real-world industry contribution.

Associate Professor Jörg Kienitz travels to South Africa every year to present masterclasses, advise PhD students and speak at conferences. We caught up with him ahead of his next masterclass in April 2025.
