Politics, Economy and Policy Design

It was attended by a large number of government departments as well as alumni from our previous course on 'The role of public policy in private sector development' run by Professors Fukuyama, Leeds and Levy in Cape Town last October and supported by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Presentations by Brian Levy, following on from the theme of his lecture on 'Public Policy: Ways Forward in Difficult Governance Environments' during the course last year, and Joel Netshitenzhe, on the very topical issue of 'The Developmental State', were very well received.
There was a lot of discussion around the topics presented and a clear indication from participants that further workshops of this nature should be made available as part of the School's quest to build an esprit de corps amongst government leaders in South Africa and in Africa more broadly by promoting links between leaders in government and leaders in other fields such as academia, business and the arts.
