The School's two professors, Alan Hirsch who is the Director of the School and our Academic Director Brian Levy, have been hard at work on the research and publication front this year.

Brian Levy’s book Working with the Grain: Integrating Governance and Growth in Development Strategies was launched a few months ago and The Oxford Companion to the Economics of South Africa, edited by Alan Hirsch and others, was launched a few weeks ago. (See also Brian's book blog.)

In addition, they have produced a number of working papers covering pertinent topics:
  1. Economic Policy in South Africa: Past, Present, and Future by Haroon Bhorat, Alan Hirsch, Ravi Kanbur and Mthuli Ncube, which is now the introduction to The Oxford Companion to the Economics of South Africa mentioned above.
  2. Policy co-ordination and growth traps in a middle-income country setting: The case of South Africa by Haroon Bhorat, Aalia Cassim, and Alan Hirsch, which looks at the strengths and weaknesses of current industrial policy.
  3. South Africa’s evolving political settlement in comparative perspective by Brian Levy, Alan Hirsch and Ingrid Woolard, which explores why the levels of inequality in the country stand out amongst our peers.
