Leading in Public Life - the first week


The first week kicked off with a welcome dinner on the Sunday night hosted by the Vice Chancellor Max Price and addressed by Trevor Manuel, senior Fellow of the Graduate School of Development Policy and Practice and former Minster of Finance. who gave the keynote address cautioning the aspirant young leaders "that leadership is not for the faint-hearted".
On Monday the course got straight down to business concentrating again on the topic of leadership. Judy Sikuza, Programme and Projects Manager for the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, gave the keynote address to help participants understand the different skills and attributes required to be effective agents of change. She highlighted the three major challenges as: (1) Purpose and vision; (2) Systems and Complexity and (3) Inner and outer work.
Some of the upcoming topics that will be covered during the 2 week course are: ethics and integrity, working towards African solutions, understanding the institutional landscape, African economic conditions and buidling functional democracies.
