The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) is advertising a post for a senior researcher in the fields of labour markets and economic development.

The IEJ is a new progressive economic policy think-tank located in South Africa. The IEJ’s core objective is to provide policy makers and progressive social forces in South Africa with access to rigorous economic analysis, and well thought through policy options, as a basis for concrete interventions.

The researcher will be responsible for two labour market projects (50% of the work) and general economic research, dependent on the candidate’s skills, and the strategic foci of the Institute.

The two projects are:

•    Work before and after the September Presidential Jobs Summit _ the IEJ is supporting social partners, in particular labour, in preparation for the Presidential Jobs Summit. This entails policy research and engagement with negotiators.

•    Minimum wages in Africa and wage inequality issues _ the IEJ, together with various partners, is in the process of forming a regional minimum wage network. In preparation for this the research will undertake preliminary “scoping research” on minimum wages in Africa. The research will then move towards more detailed work and establishing the network. At the same time the researcher will undertake work regarding wage inequality in South Africa.

The researcher will also contribute towards other on-going research within the IEJ. In addition, they will work with the leadership team to develop proposals for, and commence work on, short and medium-term research projects which relate to the four priority research streams identified by the Institute, as we prepare to bring a larger team on board.

Please note the IEJ is committed to gender and racial equity and transformation and will consider this when reviewing applications.

The contract will be twelve months. The researcher will be based in Johannesburg. IEJ hope the researcher can move on to become a permanent member of the team and assist in building the Institute.Remuneration will be at market rates and calculated based on work experience.
