What it takes to be the top university in Africa: The role of a PhD
To be a top university, you cannot just teach the textbook. You need to write the textbook. UCT Marketing Studies has a strong legacy of PhD research that breaks new ground in many streams of marketing, consumer behaviour and business. Our supervisors have expertise across several marketing themes, including consumer behaviour, digital marketing, sustainability, industrial marketing, and consumer neuroscience.
If you have completed research at the master's level, why not consider taking the next step to a PhD? The Marketing Section in the School of Management Studies offers a PhD (by thesis only) in either Business Science or Commerce.
Am I ready to do a PhD?
A PhD is the highest qualification in academia and an aspiration for many. The doctoral degree indicates that the successful student can:
- Identify a relevant potential theoretical contribution
- Use the best available literature to justify the need for the study
- Devise clear research questions and objectives
- Create a methodology to meet the objectives
- Gather, analyse and interpret data and formulate conclusions
At UCT, we take pride in the innovation shown in our PhD programmes. A PhD is not just about intelligence or time commitment; it is a deep dive into the fundamental theories of our discipline and the opportunity to contribute at the highest level. Applicants must demonstrate the necessary competencies in research methodology and practice required to complete an independent study research degree. If you are not proficient in research methodology at the master's level, you are not ready for a PhD.
Before applying, we suggest you explore the PhD concept and get a sense of what it takes. Our curriculum advisors are always on hand to help talk through your aspirations. Note that a PhD requires independent research. While our supervisors are well-trained in their disciplines, you will need to show personal competence in research before your proposal will be accepted.
What you need to apply
Admission to the programme is subject to meeting the following requirements and holding the following degrees:
- A Master's degree in Business Science or Commerce (with a specialisation in Marketing) obtained from this or any other approved tertiary institution.

- Relevant working experience will be an added advantage (current CV should be attached).
- 10-page research proposal.

How long does a PhD take?
The duration of a PhD is typically between 3 and 4 years.
