In 2015 the Jamaican Ministry of Health and Finance approached the Economics of Tobacco Control Project for tax-related technical support. The excise tax on cigarettes was unchanged at 10.5 Jamaican dollar since 2010. In consultation with government officials, members of the ETCP recommended that the excise tax be increased to at least 15.5 Jamaican dollars. In the past three years the excise tax was increased to J$ 12.5 (2015), J$ 14.5 (2016), and J$ 17 (2017) per cigarette, a move that civil society organisations attribute to the support provided by the Project.
